High Commissioner
Mr. Dharmapala Weerakkody assumed duties as the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the People's Republic of Bangladesh on 29 November 2023. He is a career diplomat who joined the Sri Lanka Foreign Service in January 2000. He is also concurrently accredited as the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Bhutan, with residence in Dhaka.
Prior to his appointment as High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Mr. Weerakkody served as the Director General of the South Asia Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment & Tourism of Sri Lanka. During his distinguished diplomatic career, he has held a wide range of positions both at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment & Tourism of Sri Lanka and at Sri Lanka's diplomatic missions overseas.
Mr. Weerakkody previously served as Minister at the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Australia. He has also been posted to Sri Lanka's diplomatic missions in Bangkok, Manila, Rome, and Chennai, where he gained extensive experience in bilateral relations, regional cooperation, economic diplomacy, consular affairs, and multilateral engagement.
He holds a Bachelor of Science (Special) Degree in Business Administration from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka, and a Master's Degree in International Relations from Annamalai University, India.
Mr. Weerakkody is married and has two daughters.
