High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Bangladesh meets FBCCI Administrator to explore new avenues for strengthening economic cooperation

The High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Bangladesh, H.E. Mr. Dharmapala Weerakkody, held a meeting with the Administrator of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI), Mr. Md. Fazlul Hoque, on 16 September 2026 at the FBCCI Gulshan office in Dhaka, with a view to exploring new avenues for further strengthening economic, trade and investment cooperation between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The FBCCI, the apex trade organization of Bangladesh, plays an important consultative and advisory role in promoting the interests of the country’s private sector and facilitating business and investment engagements.

The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral trade and investment relations and creating greater opportunities for the business communities of the two countries through a renewed and mutually beneficial partnership. Particular attention was given to potential areas for increased cooperation, including Information Technology, logistics, pharmaceutical manufacturing, apparel and textile manufacturing, renewable energy, banking and financial services, among other emerging sectors.

During the meeting, High Commissioner Weerakkody briefed the FBCCI Administrator on Sri Lanka Expo -2027, the premier international trade exhibition of Sri Lanka, scheduled to be held from 14–17 January 2027 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo. The High Commissioner extended an official invitation to the FBCCI to facilitate the participation of a Bangladeshi business delegation at the Sri Lanka Expo -2027, which will provide an important platform for businesses from the two countries to explore trade, investment and commercial partnerships.

Mr. Md. Fazlul Hoque welcomed the initiative and expressed a positive response regarding the participation of a Bangladeshi business delegation at Sri Lanka Expo - 2027, noting the potential of such engagement to further promote business-to-business linkages and contribute to the expansion of bilateral trade and investment relations.

The meeting also underscored the importance of strengthening direct engagement between the private sectors of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and identifying new areas of collaboration that could contribute to sustained economic growth and closer bilateral relations.

Ms. Gayanga Dias, Second Secretary of the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Dhaka and Mr. Md. Alamgir, Secretary General of the FBCCI, were also present at the meeting.
